This was a rotation tape, not a liquidation — the Nasdaq bled while breadth held up underneath.
SPY closed near 752, off 0.37%, while QQQ shed a full 1.0% to 710.55 as chips slid for a second straight session. TSM delivered a strong quarter and the tape sold it anyway — the tell that stretched AI valuations, not fundamentals, are the sticking point. Corning fell 6.7%, SanDisk 5.4% and ServiceNow 4.7% as the memory and AI complex unwound.
Under the hood the internals were constructive. IWM printed +0.38% and the Dow held roughly flat; communication services, consumer discretionary and financials all closed green, and UNH ripped 5.6% on its report. Defensives lagged with utilities down about 1%. That is money rotating out of crowded megacap tech into cyclicals and small caps — a healthier read than the headline Nasdaq tape suggests, with vol contained in the low-to-mid teens.
The risk: Netflix reports after the bell with options pricing a 7 to 9% move and IV in the 99th percentile, so a sloppy reaction reprices the whole streaming and comm-services complex. Stack tomorrow's July monthly OPEX on top and the large gamma roll-off can unpin the tape, turning today's orderly rotation into a directional move. A gap that drags financials or discretionary offside flips the constructive-breadth read straight to risk-off.
