Tape is risk-off into the open: oil is ripping, yields are pinned near cycle highs, and futures are bid lower after the US struck Iranian tankers overnight following a missile hit on a Navy vessel.
WTI near $95 and Brent above $100 are doing the damage, with the 10-year still hovering close to 4.8% after Tuesday's session dropped the Dow 1.18% to 52,786, the S&P 500 0.6%, and the Nasdaq 0.3%. VIX ticked up to ~15.7. Semis (SMH, INTC, AMD) were the one bright spot, absorbing some of the damage from credit-sensitive megacaps and software names that got hit as AI-related bond supply weighs on the tape. SPX cash sits around 7,680, roughly 27 record closes into the year but down about 1% on the month, so dip-buyers have been rewarded but conviction is thinning.
Dealer gearing is running defensive with vol bid on the oil shock — expect thinner liquidity and faster air-pockets on any headline escalation. Today's calendar itself is light, but it's a bridge day: PPI lands tomorrow, CPI Friday, and Fed funds futures already price roughly 60% odds of a hike at the Sept 15-16 FOMC, an unusual hawkish skew markets aren't fully digesting. SpaceX's second lockup unlock (~319mm shares) and Oracle earnings this week are secondary swing factors.
The risk: a fresh Iran/Saudi supply headline or a hot PPI/CPI print that cements the hike odds — either sends oil and yields higher together and forces a real de-grossing, not just a soft fade.
