Futures firm into September NFP as SPY, QQQ press toward records on light vol

Friday, October 2, 2026 · the tape framed before the US open · bias: risk-on

Futures are grinding higher into the jobs report, with SPY and QQQ both bid toward record territory on thin overnight volume.

SPY closed Thursday at 763.99 and is marked near 767-768 in the pre-market, a print that puts the prior close at 764 as the session flip and leaves the index knocking on the August closing high of 775.95 and the 779.37 52-week top as the next supply zone. QQQ closed 742.03 and is bid to roughly 747 pre-bell; 745-750 has been the stacked resistance shelf dealers have defended for weeks, with 735 the first real support if the tape rolls over.

Without a live gamma read, treat these as indicative, but the vol backdrop argues dealers are still long gamma: QQQ implied vol sits near 21%, in-line with realized, and IV rank is only in the high-30s — the options market isn't paying up for event risk, which usually means small realized ranges until proven otherwise. That complacency is being tested by the calendar: September nonfarm payrolls lands at 8:30am, consensus near 89k versus August's 162k, unemployment seen ticking to 4.0% from 4.1%. It's the cleanest labor read since the funding fight disrupted the data flow, and the last one before the October 28 FOMC, with futures markets already leaning toward a December cut.

The risk: a payrolls beat that revives rate-hold chatter, pushes yields up, and hits the duration-sensitive mega-cap trade that's carried both indices to records — watch whether the open holds above the 764/742 flips or reverses hard on the print.
